LANCE is a change-making newsletter and community that fights for freelancers everywhere.
It’s written by me, Anna Codrea-Rado, a journalist, broadcaster and campaigner.
Every Friday, LANCE publishes a piece of original reporting about the independent workers’ community.
Our mission is to help anyone who works for themselves through our radical journalism, expert-backed advice and inspiring stories. We champion the global freelance community by covering the injustices the self-employed face, as well as entertaining our readers with uplifting stories about the quirks of freelance life. LANCE is a place where those who work outside of the traditional 9-to-5 can feel seen and heard.
LANCE is committed to open news. All its original reporting is free for all to access, funded directly by its readers who sign up as members. LANCE membership is tailor-made for freelancers; a toolbox to level up your solo career. Membership not only helps you be the best freelancer can you be, but it also sustains LANCE’s mission to bring about lasting change for the global freelance community.
🚀 LANCE members receive the following benefits:
Invitations to LANCE Chats, a series of member-only virtual events. The next one is on Jan 18 with Martin Lewis, founder of MoneySavingExpert.com about freelancer finances
An exclusive, weekly insider-email packed with industry insights, work tips, cool opportunities and more
Access to live online discussion threads with me and the other LANCE members to chat, rant and revel about freelance life
PLUS: If you sign up before Jan 22, you can join the inaugural LANCE Accountability Club, a support group of like-minded freelancers to help you reach your professional goals this year.

Hi! I’m Anna. I’m a journalist who writes about business, culture and technology. My writing appears in the New York Times, Guardian, Wired, the BBC, Monocle and many others. I’ve been working in the media for ten years, including on staff as an editor at the Guardian and Vice.
After losing my job as a news editor in a round of company-wide redundancies in 2017, I went freelance. In one year, I had a front-page byline in the New York Times, features in the Paris Review, New York Magazine and Wired, as well as a steady and reliable income.
I started writing this newsletter when I first went freelance as a place to document my journey into the unknown that was self-employment. Since then, it’s grown into a community and platform for fighting for the better treatment of freelancers everywhere.
